Choose words and clues you want on the cards
Enter a vocabulary word in one column and a clue in the other. A clue can be an English definition, a translation, or pinyin. The learning content can use different languages while the controls stay in English.
A short, familiar clue is easier to read on a small card. For example, use kind,Caring and helpful rather than a long dictionary entry. A longer field is supported, but cards may need more space and fewer may fit on a page.
Copy two columns directly from a spreadsheet, type rows in the editor, or download an editable English sample list. Wordnest accepts CSV, TSV, TXT, and XLSX imports plus its own JSON backups.
Print, cut, and fold in five steps
- Open the printable flashcard maker and select Flashcards.
- Edit or import your word list. Switching from another activity keeps your existing words.
- In Page setup, choose the practice direction to decide which text is the target and which is the clue. Card layout is fixed, so practice-sheet column and line controls are hidden.
- Select A4 or US Letter and preview every card page. Print using the matching paper size, 100% scale, and browser headers and footers turned off.
- Cut around each card's outer border, then fold on the middle line. Keep cutting and assembly appropriate to your child's age.
You do not need to enable two-sided printing. In the normal layout, the target word occupies the top half and the clue occupies the bottom half. Fold the clue half behind the word half.
Three simple ways to use the same cards
- Read together: look at both sides and say each pair before trying to recall it.
- Clue first: show the clue and invite the child to name the word. Turn the card to check together.
- Make two piles: separate familiar words from words to revisit. Keep the piles flexible; this is an activity idea, not an automated assessment.
For a paper activity with the same vocabulary, switch to Matching game. Choose Practice sheet when you want independent writing space.
Page counts, long text, and backups
Flashcards use two cards across the page and enough height for their text. The 20-word English sample produces three US Letter pages in the current layout. Your page count may differ with longer clues, different scripts, or another paper size. Trust the preview and printed page summary for your own list.
The answer-key control is disabled for Flashcards because the clue is already included on each card. Download a JSON backup to keep the list and activity settings; use Save as PDF in the print dialog to keep the printable pages.
Questions parents ask
Do I need a duplex printer?
No. Each cut-and-fold card includes its target and clue on the same sheet. Normal one-sided printing is enough.
Can I change card columns or print a separate answer key?
Flashcards have a fixed two-column layout. A separate key is not produced because every card already includes the clue.
