Start with the words your child is already learning
A school spelling list, a favorite story, or familiar family words can be your starting point. Wordnest provides the page layout; you choose the content and whether it fits your child. The English starter list is editable, so you do not need to invent a new list before trying the tool.
Each row needs a word and a clue. A clue can be a short definition, a translation, or a sentence with a blank. The tool does not automatically write definitions or check whether your clue has one possible answer.
word,clue
family,The people who care for you
kind,Caring and helpful
brave,Ready to try even when afraidFor the blank-sentence approach, try garden,We grow flowers in the ____.. Use a clue your child can understand without needing another dictionary.
Make the worksheet in five steps
- Open the spelling worksheet maker and choose English or Any language.
- Edit the starter rows, or choose Import or paste words. Paste two columns from Excel or Google Sheets, or upload a CSV, TSV, TXT, or XLSX file.
- Open Page setup. For a definition-to-word exercise, choose Read the clue, write the word. The reverse direction asks the child to write the clue instead.
- Choose one or two columns and Compact, Regular, or Roomy writing space. Ruled lines leave a writing line; Blank space leaves the answer area open.
- Choose A4 or US Letter. Check the preview, optionally select Include answer key, and choose Print worksheet.
To save a PDF, use Save as PDF in the browser print dialog. Match the paper size and use 100% scale. Turning off browser headers and footers prevents the page address from being printed over the worksheet.
Choose recall, copying, or another activity
The normal Practice sheet hides the answer. Study together displays both columns, which is useful when first meeting the words. If you want a model followed by a blank writing area, use Tuesday's Copy & write page in a five-day pack.
The same list can also become cut-and-fold flashcards or a matching game. Switching activities preserves the list. Shuffling changes the practice order and keeps the parent answer key aligned.
Import limits and keeping your work
A list can contain up to 500 words, with 200 characters in each field. Import files must be no larger than 2 MB. Both columns must be complete before printing. Errors identify the affected line and do not replace your existing words.
Words and settings are saved in this browser, not in an online account. Download a JSON backup before changing devices or clearing browser data. A CSV export keeps the words for spreadsheet editing; a JSON backup also keeps the page and activity settings.
Questions parents ask
Can I paste a school spelling list without definitions?
Wordnest needs two non-empty columns. Add your own definition, translation, or sentence clue beside each word. It does not generate missing clues automatically.
Does looking at the Answer key tab make the answers print?
No. The preview tab only changes what you see. Select Include answer key to print separate parent answer pages.
